Behind the Seams: Crafting the Turnbull Tie

Posted 29.07.25

In a quiet corner of Gloucester, amidst the soft hum of sewing machines and the gentle rhythm of hands at work, our ties come to life. Here, within the walls of our dedicated factory, Turnbull & Asser’s storied craftsmanship finds its heartbeat – not just in our shirts, but in the meticulous making of our neckwear.

As we mark 140 years of sartorial heritage, we return to our roots: a tradition steeped in artistry, precision, and quiet pride. Every tie, bow tie, and cravat is handmade by skilled craftspeople whose expertise has been passed down through generations – stitched into every fold, pressed into every seam.

A Matter of Cloth and Character

Visual 2

At the heart of each tie is the cloth. Our silks are sourced from the most reputable mills in England, chosen not simply for their sheen but for their story. Some are jacquard-woven with subtle texture, others screen-printed in England using traditional methods. You will find patterns inspired by archival prints, Georgian architecture and vintage military regalia, sitting alongside bold colourwork that recalls the Modernist movement. Every design is made exclusively for Turnbull & Asser.

We also offer knitted silks for a more relaxed sensibility, and woven options that hold their shape with quiet structure. Whether bright or understated, each cloth is made with one purpose in mind – to become something lasting.

The Cut and the Craft

Visual 3

Our ties are always cut by hand and always on the true bias. This diagonal cut allows the tie to drape correctly when knotted, sitting smoothly against the shirt and hanging without twist.

Inside, a pure wool interlining gives substance and helps the tie return to its shape after wear. Each piece is then tipped and slip-stitched by hand, a painstaking process that builds both flexibility and longevity into the final construction. That hidden slip stitch – a single thread running the length of the tie – is what allows the tie to stretch and move, then return to its original form. It is a small detail, but one that makes all the difference.

Worn with Purpose

Visual 4

To wear a Turnbull & Asser tie is to understand the value of process. There is a certain dignity in tying a Turnbull tie each morning, a deliberate gesture that sets the tone for the day. Whether worn in the boardroom or the drawing room, these pieces add structure and refinement to the everyday.

They are not designed for a season, but for a lifetime of wear. Ties that hold their knot, that honour tradition, and that never fall out of favour.

In this anniversary year, we welcome you behind the scenes. This is how we craft elegance, one tie at a time.
