A Heritage of Innovation: The Churchill Tribute Capsule
In a Turnbull & Asser exclusive, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth. Inspired by Churchill’s discerning taste, sartorial choices and disposition through attire, our curated capsule embodies the tale of our storied history through a contemporary aesthetic of unparalleled sophistication.
While Churchill prided himself as a practical over a dandy, he had an appreciation for the finer things in life. A frequent patron of St. James in London, he turned to Turnbull & Asser for decades to create his shirts and bow ties before commissioning the acclaimed siren suit during World War II. Over the years, these garments became symbolic of Churchill’s signature style, characterised by functionality and effortless sophistication.
We are pleased to be a part of the Icons of British Fashion Exhibition at Blenheim Palace, which features the original siren suit and full tribute capsule on display.
THE SIREN SUIT
During the height of World War II, Churchill commissioned a rather unconventional item from Turnbull & Asser - a one-piece coverall. The suit’s wartime appeal came from the ability to be slipped on during air-raid sirens while keeping the wearer's modesty. Soon, it became Churchill’s staple, wearing it off-duty to significant historical events and long into peacetime.
Eclectic, sleek and meticulously crafted – the siren suit is emblematic of Sir Winston's attire by its radically simple, functional aesthetic infused with Churchill's discerning taste.
Today, visitors flock to our Jermyn Street flagship to marvel at the original green velvet suit. One of three that are still known to exist, which is currently on display at Blenheim Palace.
Functionality First
Our capsule honours Churchill's approach to functional style. Case in point: the Overshirt and Safari Trouser ensemble crafted from pure cotton cloth and tinged with two timeless colourways – navy and khaki – derived from traditional workwear and military uniforms. A dialled-down take on the siren suit, notice the roomy patch pockets on the chest and discreet belt loops at the waist, destined for your favourite Turnbull & Asser belt. The trousers are deliberately simple, ensuring they can be styled in a myriad of ways – a requirement for today's discerning gent.
The perfect footwear pairing to our Churchill capsule. Classically British and elegant, you can’t go wrong with Churchill’s footwear of choice: Tricker’s. One of the longest-established shoemakers in England, Tricker's gained popularity as a producer of sturdy country boots and, to this day, is renowned for its unwavering commitment to excellence and craftsmanship.
CHURCHILL REIMAGINED
Translating Churchill's signature dress codes, our capsule investigates the concept of modernised classics, infusing imaginative flair into enduring wardrobe staples.
A harmony of modern practicality and elegance defines this collection, gesturing to our future creative direction. Just as Churchill sought these qualities from Turnbull & Asser years ago, we're sure he would have also adorned these pieces if he were among us today.
