Icons of Turnbull: Our Founders

Posted 31.01.25

2025 marks a monumental occasion for Turnbull & Asser as we celebrate 140 years of British craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless elegance. This anniversary offers a moment to reflect on the rich heritage that has defined our brand, beginning with the visionary founders John Arthur Turnbull and Ernest Asser. Their partnership not only established Turnbull & Asser but also set the standard for fine menswear worldwide.

A Shop in St. James’s: The Beginnings of a British Icon

In 1885, London’s St. James’s buzzing district was a hub of sophistication and style, attracting the city’s elite. It was here, at 3 Church Place, that John Arthur Turnbull opened his first shop. Nestled between Piccadilly and Jermyn Street, the boutique quickly became a destination for gentlemen seeking impeccable craftsmanship and innovative design.

Turnbull distinguished himself early on with creations like the Quorn Scarf, an adjustable hunting cravat that captured the attention of the sporting elite. This versatile accessory epitomised the Victorian gentleman’s balance of practicality and elegance. Recognising this as the signature piece, Turnbull’s shop became a trusted name among the discerning clientele of late Victorian society. His commitment to quality and his eye for innovation formed the foundation of what would become a globally recognised brand.

The Arrival of Ernest Asser: A Partnership Forged in Excellence

In 1893, Ernest Asser joined the business, bringing with him an injection of entrepreneurial energy and business acumen. Born into a family of artisans and merchants, Asser had an inherent understanding of quality and commerce. His arrival marked the beginning of a transformative era for the company. Tragically, John Turnbull passed away in 1895, leaving the company in Ernest Asser’s hands. Despite this loss, Asser’s determination propelled the brand forward. He navigated competitive challenges with resilience, including the establishment of a rival shop by John Turnbull’s wife, Ellen. Under Asser’s leadership, Turnbull & Asser not only endured but flourished, expanding its reputation as a purveyor of the finest garments.

Redefining Menswear for Generations

In retrospect the collaboration between Turnbull and Asser was more than a business partnership; it was a meeting of minds that redefined menswear. Together, they combined innovative design with impeccable craftsmanship, creating garments that balanced style and function. Their shared vision of sophistication and practicality became the cornerstone of the brand’s ethos.

Through the decades, Turnbull & Asser has remained true to this legacy, crafting attire for royalty, film icons, and leaders in every field. The pioneering spirit of our founders continues to inspire our dedication to excellence and our unwavering commitment to British tailoring traditions.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

As we recognise 140 years of Turnbull & Asser, we honour the remarkable journey that began in St James’s and remains to this day. Their passion, skill, and resilience laid the groundwork for an enduring brand that has transcended generations and become synonymous with British elegance. This year, we celebrate not just their legacy but also the enduring spirit of craftsmanship that defines Turnbull & Asser.
