Winston Churchill: The Blitz and the Siren Suit
As the Blitz began to ravage London, Turnbull & Asser was entrusted with a unique challenge: creating a garment that Winston Churchill, Britain’s steadfast wartime leader, could don swiftly yet elegantly during air raids. Thus, the iconic siren suit was born. Churchill’s siren suits were far from utilitarian. Over the course of World War II and beyond, they became increasingly luxurious, with Turnbull & Asser tailoring versions in grey pinstripe for formal settings and rich claret, emerald, and peacock blue velvet for evening wear. One of Churchill’s most notable siren suits made its way into his final official portrait in 1955, a fitting representation of his iconic leadership and impeccable style.
In 2024, we proudly celebrated Churchill’s 150th birthday with a tribute capsule and an exclusive exhibition at Blenheim Palace, honouring his enduring legacy.
His Majesty King Charles III: A Legacy of Royal Elegance
Turnbull & Asser’s prosperous years began on an extraordinary note when, as a thirty-year-old Prince of Wales, His Majesty King Charles III granted the company the right to hold his Royal Warrant. This prestigious honour solidified Turnbull & Asser’s position as the royal shirt and tie maker, a distinction proudly held ever since. The King also shared a personal anecdote from his time as an avid polo player, recalling when he broke his arm during a match. Our previous Head shirt cutter Paul Cuss was promptly dispatched to Highgrove, His Majesty’s Gloucestershire residence, to create bespoke shirts specially tailored for his needs. These “wonderful shirts with one arm,” as the King fondly called them, exemplified Turnbull & Asser’s unparalleled craftsmanship and commitment to serving its patrons with care and precision.

President Ronald Reagan: The Secret of English Elegance
In 1985, Turnbull & Asser was called upon to assist a client of the highest stature: President Ronald Reagan. Discretion was paramount, as it was deemed critical that the American public remained unaware of Reagan’s penchant for English shirts, which might have been perceived as unpatriotic. To ensure the president was outfitted perfectly, Paul Cuss, the Prince of Wales’s shirtmaker, was sent to Washington to take Reagan’s measurements personally.
From war leaders to world leaders, our legacy continues - woven through 140 years of British history, shaped by the hands that stitch, cut and craft for those who lead, inspire, and endure.
